Eco-Friendly Stone Cleaning: What Products Are Safe?

Not all cleaning products are safe for natural stone. We guide you through eco-friendly options that protect both your surfaces and the environment.

Why Product Choice Matters for Natural Stone

Natural stone — marble, travertine, granite, limestone — is beautiful but demanding. Unlike ceramic tiles or vinyl flooring, stone surfaces react chemically to many common cleaning agents. Using the wrong product can cause:

  • Etching: Dull, acid-burned patches on marble and limestone
  • Stripping: Removing the protective sealant layer
  • Discolouration: Bleach and ammonia can yellow or stain certain stones
  • Long-term weakening: Repeated exposure to harsh chemicals softens stone over time

The good news? Safe, eco-friendly alternatives perform just as well — and often better — than aggressive chemical cleaners.

Products to Avoid

Acidic Cleaners

Any product with vinegar, lemon, or listed acids is dangerous for marble, limestone, and travertine.

  • Vinegar-based multi-surface sprays
  • Citrus cleaners
  • Bathroom descalers
  • Grout cleaners containing HCl (hydrochloric acid)

Bleach and Chlorine Products

While bleach disinfects, it can permanently discolour stone and destroys protective sealants.

Ammonia-Based Products

Many glass and multi-surface cleaners contain ammonia. These strip away sealants and dull polished surfaces.

Abrasive Scrubs

Powders and pads designed for stubborn stains will scratch polished stone surfaces.

Safe, Eco-Friendly Alternatives

1. pH-Neutral Stone Cleaners

The gold standard for day-to-day stone care. pH-neutral formulas (pH 7) are chemically inert — they will not react with the stone or sealant.

What to look for: Labels that say “safe for natural stone,” “pH-balanced,” or “neutral formula.”

2. Plant-Based Surfactants

Many newer eco-friendly stone cleaners use plant-derived surfactants instead of petroleum-based chemicals. These biodegrade quickly, are safe for grey water systems, and are non-toxic to people and pets.

3. Microfibre Cloths and Dry Mopping

One of the most effective eco-friendly cleaning methods: simply remove grit and dust daily with a dry microfibre mop. Grit is the primary cause of surface scratching — removing it daily reduces wear significantly.

4. Warm Water for Light Cleaning

For lightly soiled surfaces, plain warm water with a well-wrung microfibre mop is often sufficient. Avoid leaving standing water on stone.

5. Natural Wax-Based Sealers

For natural stone in low-traffic areas (feature walls, decorative surfaces), natural wax provides a breathable, protective barrier. Not suitable for high-traffic floors but excellent for countertops and walls.
